The tasks of the industrial engineer

The Polytechnique defines the industrial engineer as a “decision maker”, that is to say an engineer who occupies a management position in a company. Here are its main tasks:

• optimization;
• the design and management of industrial systems and processes;
• quality control;
• monitoring the productivity of assembly lines.

As a result, the industrial engineer digs his nose less into the books of pure physics and mathematics than his colleagues. Rather, he acquires the knowledge and tools necessary to manage the workforce.

Salary

Because they often occupy managerial or coordinating positions, industrial engineers earn a fairly high salary. According to the survey on the compensation of engineering professionals, an industrial engineer earns an average of $ 108,563 per year, or nearly $ 7,000 above the average for Quebec engineers, which is $ 101,726.

Like chemical engineering, industrial engineering is one of the most equal engineering disciplines: 33% of industrial engineers are women. By comparison, this proportion for all engineers is only 15%.

Training

Becoming an industrial engineer requires completing the corresponding baccalaureate. You must also be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) to have access to the title.

In Quebec, it is possible to register for the bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at four different universities: Polytechnique, Concordia University, Laval University and the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières (UQTR).

Employment sectors

As the name suggests, an industrial engineer is mainly found work in industry, that is to say factories and other production units.

The most important sectors that hire industrial engineers are the agri-food manufacturing sector (25% of industrial engineers in Quebec), plastic and rubber manufacturers (18%), consulting engineering firms (16%) and equipment manufacturers land transport (10%).
