With more than 63,000 members in the Order of Engineers of Québec, we can say that the province is not in shortage of engineering professionals. It’s no wonder, then, that many jobs in the industry are bombarded with applications.
So if you want to land one of these coveted engineering jobs, how do you stand out from the crowd? The Muse offers three tips for getting recruiters’ attention.
1. Make a portfolio of your career
If you’re by nature and struggle to sell yourself, creating a career portfolio is a great idea to grab the attention of potential employers. A portfolio kills two birds with one stone: it makes you showcase your qualities, and allows an employer to get to know you before the job interview.
A portfolio usually includes:
A biographical page summarizing your qualities, the education you have received, and your accomplishments.
Information on your career, your internships, your possible volunteering, your language skills, your hobbies, and other things that differentiate you from others.
Testimonials and recommendations from people with whom you have worked, former bosses, teachers, or clients.
Proof of your technical skills. It could be examples of projects you’ve worked on, a link to your GitHub profile, or even graphics showing how your skills complement each other to make you the perfect candidate. Don’t be afraid to be creative!
Evidence of your non-technical skills. For example, when describing your internships, don’t just put links or photos, but explain how your work has benefited the company. You can cite your non-professional accomplishments if they show you a particular quality.
Your portfolio should be available online so that you can include it in your CV, on your LinkedIn profile, or on other materials with which you apply. But it’s also a good idea to bring a hard copy to every interview for the recruiter to review.
2. Know the company
The best way to get noticed by a recruiter naturally is to show them that you have the skills the company is looking for. To demonstrate this, find out about the company you are applying for in order to know its philosophy. When you are interviewed, show the recruiter how your skills fit this philosophy.
3. Get involved
Engineering is a profession based on progress and technology. Engineers must therefore constantly learn, evolve, and develop new skills.
Several methods exist to keep you up to date. You can join a network of professionals and participate in their conferences, or even take part in online forums. You can also participate in various and varied projects, to gain experience in several areas.

1: Prepare like a pro
The first thing you need to keep in mind when doing a delayed video interview through Easyrecrue is to look professional.
For this, you need to prepare several things before recording your video:
Step 1. Find a location
In the room, you choose there must be enough light.
Ideally, the light should be in front of you. To do this, face a window or install a light source that shines on your face.
You also need to think about your background.
It must be neutral: a white wall or a bookcase will do very well.
And then, it’s common sense, but I’m telling you anyway: remember to clean and take off the socks that are lying around!
Step 2. Install your camera correctly
To perform your Easyrecrue maintenance, you can use your phone or your computer.
If you opt for the phone, consider using a small stand to keep your phone stable while you are recording.
If you decide to do your interview on the computer, it’s easier but you will have to remember to elevate your computer by putting books so that the camera is at your eye level.

2. Test the technique

Test the sound
Small tip, to improve the sound quality of your recording, you can plug in your headphones. This will allow you to amplify your voice and not register all the noises around.
Check the framing

We don’t just want to see your forehead and even less your double chin (we all have one if it’s taken from below …)
A small tip that is important: one of my customers used it and I find it great!
On Easyrecrue, you have a limited time to answer questions: 3 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute, and sometimes not even 30 seconds. Difficult to be concise and punchy on the first take.
What I recommend you do is shoot the first take to find out how much time you have to answer a question and see how it works.
If you are not satisfied, do not continue with the second take right away. You have the time you want between each shot. This being the case, jot down your ideas on a piece of paper and if necessary, you can cut your text and make it fit for the allotted time.
Then practice answering the question out loud by timing yourself.
Repeat your text as many times as necessary. When you’re happy with yourself, save.
For the second take, you will have a clear idea of what to say and will be more comfortable.

Give all your energy
Another tip to go well on the screen, I advise you to give a lot of energy. You have to give more than when you are face to face.
Don’t be afraid to do too much!
Pay attention to your language
You have time to prepare, so you need to be careful with your language.
No familiar expression is tolerated and we do our best to erase all his language tics such as “uh .. there .. just …”
I want you to make a DYNAMIC, IMPACTING response from someone who WANTS IT!

3. The questions that are asked
Here are the questions you absolutely must prepare:

You will have two minutes to respond, but remember to prepare a shorter version as well as some companies will only give you a minute or even 30 seconds.

“WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT US?”
It is very important to show that you have learned about the business.
You can also be asked this question:
“WHAT DID YOU UNDERSTAND FROM THE POSITION?”
In this case, you should be able to explain in a few words what you understood from the ad. Be able to be synthetic and explain in 30 seconds what are the challenges of the position.
For juniors, you will also be asked why you decided to work in a particular sector.
Why do you want to orient yourself in communication?
Why do you want to work in the bank?
Why do you want to orient yourself in counseling?
Prepare your answers and your professional project well.
Another question that comes up often:
“WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE QUALITIES THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS JOB?”
Or “WHAT ARE YOUR DEFECTS?” “

Tip 2: be factual and business oriented
When aiming for a salesperson or sales manager position, numbers matter.

Tip 3: For Sales Representatives, Show Your Style
You have to explain how you operate.
Are you more interested in prospecting? Are you not afraid to pick up your phone, go out into the field, and call on people?
Or you are rather someone who will be in loyalty, the move upmarket of its customers?
Tip 4: for sales managers, give your vision of management
If you are aiming for a sales manager position, there are several points that you need to review:
State your vision for management.
Remember that you have been an excellent salesperson who will, from now on, guide his employees to achieve the objectives set.
Show that you are very result-oriented. Do not hesitate to say that you are going to set up an action plan and that you are there to drive the commercial activity of the service.
Stand out by highlighting a strong point! This can be your knowledge of the field, your collaborations with competitors, the development of your address book …

Tip 5: prepare to be put in a situation
During the job interview, you are there to be tested, so that we can define which professional you are.

Tip 6: show your motivation
You are a salesperson or a future sales manager; you must be able to show your motivation.
For this, you must release certain energy throughout the interview. By showing this energy, you will prove to the recruiter your self-confidence and your ability to achieve the goals that you will be given.
What is even more effective is to set up what is called in psychology: the mirror effect.
What is the mirror effect?
It is the fact of being attentive to his interlocutor to create a kind of mimicry.
Your goal is therefore to mimic the person in front of you.
This means that :
If you have a very energetic person, you are going to have to be in the same energy as that person, if not a little more.
If you have someone calm in front of you, think about it too, while giving some impetus to show that you are going to be that person who is going to bring a lot to the team.

Tip 7: Prepare the Questions to Sell Yourself
Consider preparing some questions like:
Why do you think you are the best candidate?
Why should we choose you?
It’s really important. When you are in a job interview for a salesperson or sales manager position, you really have to think of this interview as if you are going to sell a product.
And in your case, the product is you!
How do you usually go about selling a product or service?
You highlight the benefits that the customer will derive from it.
You must do the same for you. What are the benefits that the company will reap if they hire you?
Tip 8: ask relevant questions
Last important thing: you must also be able to ask relevant questions.
If you are asked: Do you have any questions?
The answer should always be YES!
You show that you are already projecting yourself into the position. This job interview should be the start of a first work meeting.
So you have questions because if tomorrow you are to be selected for the position, you want to understand how things work within this company, what are the difficulties and challenges to be met…
In short, by asking lots of questions and taking notes, you show your interlocutor that you are very involved, that you are ready to take up the great challenges that will be given to you.
