5 Great Careers in Hospitality and Tourism

If you like meeting new people and you’re looking for the kind of job where each day is a bit of an adventure, have you ever considered a job in hospitality or tourism? According to many reports, it’s a booming field that only continues to grow and based on what kind of position that you’re looking for, you can make between $60,000-100,000 per year.

Cruise ship director. If you really enjoy the open seas, you don’t mind spending months at a time on a cruise ship and you’d like to have a position where you can be in charge of the entertainment for a company, how about becoming a cruise ship director? You will be the one in charge of all of the entertainment and activities on the cruise ship, along with planning the tour itineraries too. To qualify for this job, it’s recommended that you get a bachelor’s in leisure studies. You can make between $4,000-7,000 each month in this kind of position.

Event planner. Whenever a company or facility has a large event, they tend to use a professional event planner to put it all together. That’s because event planners have the skills needed in order to do things like plan the menu, negotiate contracts, provide the entertainment and anything else that is needed for the event to go smoothly. Although you’re not required to have any formal education to apply for this kind of job, the minimum of an associate’s degree in hospitality, management or catering is recommended. Salaries tend to start off at around $39,000-42,000.

Hotel manager. If you would like to work in a hotel but you’d prefer an administrative position, how about becoming a hotel manager? They are the people who are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of a hotel from supervising staff to ordering from vendors to making sure that everything is working in its proper condition. Although salaries vary based on the kind of hotel that you work for, many make as much as $95,000 annually. To apply for this kind of job, you will need a bachelor’s in hotel or restaurant management.

Chef. Do you like to cook or bake? If so, how about getting into a culinary program so that you can become either a regional or pastry chef for a restaurant or hotel? Aside from preparing food, a regional chef also takes care of the administrative duties behind running a kitchen; they can make six-figures doing so. And if you become an executive pastry chef, some of your original recipes could help you to earn close to $60,000 each year.

Travel writer/blogger. If you’re someone who goes to England or Spain every chance that you get or you automatically know things like the quickest form of transportation from CT to JFK or the best restaurants in Seattle and you love to write, why not become a travel writer or blogger? Although it might not be as lucrative as the other positions that we’ve listed, there are many companies that look for writers and some are even willing to reimburse some of the travel fees.
